The Frist Center Phantom Bodies-6

Phantom Bodies: The Human Aura in Art is one of the latest exhibitions at the Frist Center featuring over 20 different artists. The title of the exhibition alludes to phantom limb syndrome, which occurs when a person perceives sensation in a missing body part. Phantom Bodies includes a variety of paintings, videos, photography, sculpture and installations touching on themes of loss, trauma, and transformation. Frist Center Chief Curator Mark Scala organized the exhibition, which is the third in a series about the human body in modern art. The exhibition runs from October 30, 2015 to February 14, 2016.

“The artworks in this exhibition are meant to inspire reflection about the relationship between body, mind, and soul, while triggering feelings of empathy, remembrance and compassion,” says Mr. Scala. “While it is frequently a source of pain, the phantom limb here symbolizes the memory of wholeness and a longing for a return of what has been lost.”
