There’s some cool stuff happening in the Wedgewood-Houston (“WeHo”) neighborhood. Though it’s a little under the radar now, WeHo is getting more attention lately as new restaurants like Smokin Thighs draw people to one of the oldest neighborhoods in Nashville.

You may have seen the Smokin Thighs food truck driving around the city the last couple years, and as of September 1, 2014, there’s a restaurant to accompany it. Founder Matthew Carney is one of the first food truck owners to turn the concept into a brick-and-mortar restaurant in Nashville.

The food truck business taught Carney a lot about cookin’ up tasty food with limited space and equipment, so the new restaurant has made it even easier for him to create some outstanding dishes. Smokin Thighs speciality is smoked and grilled chicken — not fried. This sets Smokin Thighs apart from most chicken-driven restaurants. They start their process by apple-wood-smoking each piece of chicken for a selected amount of time. Then they flash them in one of their many temperature-rated BBQ-based sauces. The chicken is then grilled and served.

Smokin Thighs’ bright green accent color is easy to spot as you make your way down Wedgewood Avenue. When you walk through the doors, you immediately notice the wood-grain walls and the bold red chairs. There are numerous four-top tables and one comfy booth for a group that gets their early enough to claim it. Eight 47-inch HD televisions cover one wall, ideal for watching many sports games at once, making it a top destination for serious fantasy football spectators. The patio has six tables and umbrellas if you’d rather enjoy your chicken and beverages outside. The barrel sink and mason jar soap dispenser in the bathrooms are worth checking out, too.

Smokin Thighs’ other focus at the restaurant is moonshine… a whole lot of moonshine! In fact, Smokin Thighs has the largest selection of moonshine in Nashville, with over 100 different varieties. Don’t be intimidated by moonshine, though. According to Carney, their moonshine-based margarita (“moonrita”) outshines your typical margarita. There are other appealing moonshine cocktails, too, like the Orange Creamsicle and Moon Pie Float. For the non-moonshiners they also have beer, wine, and other cocktails.
