Bar Otaku, the latest concept from chef and restauranteur Sarah Gavigan, officially opened in the Gulch on Monday, January 14, 2019. Gavigan’s dream to open a traditional izakaya (a casual Japanese pub) has finally come to fruition, expanding on her popular brand, Otaku Ramen. The new bar took over the space previously occupied by Little Octopus, which was also one of her projects. Nashville Guru got a look inside.

The Interior

Bar Otaku’s 2,700-square-foot interior offers communal seating, private booths, a bar, and a chef’s counter. The cozy space has dark walls, light wood tones, and Otaku-style art, incorporating a variety of illustrations, paintings, figurines, photos, and anime characters. Venture to the back to get a look at the moon among the colorful lanterns.

The Menu

The cuisine centers around Japanese soul food. Expect shareable plates ranging from greens to rice to raw fish. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are also available. Beer, sake, soju, and Japanese whiskey are the highlights of the beverage program. See the menu.
